The Experiences of Daily Life among Elderly Women with Cataracts

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the meanings and natures embedded in experiences of daily life among elderly women with cataracts.

Methods: The present study adopted hermeneutic phenomenological method which was developed by Max van Manen. Three elderly women were interviewed over an one month period. data were collected from Oct. 20 to Nov. 27, 2007. The contents of the interviews were taped-recorded with the consent of the participants.

Results: It was found through this study that the old women suffering from the cataract were experiencing such troubles related to their visual handicap as "stifling and harassed due to dim and blurring eyesight", "discouraged and alienated in their social relationship", "learning about how to handle their conditions for themselves", "remorseful when being reminded of their healthy past" ,"despair and fear which cannot but be endured" and "self-condolence with a positive self-image".

Conclusion: The old women with cataracts were experiencing various psycho-social problems. While being troubled by a sense of burden for their daily life. Although they were troubled by their memory of healthy past and psycho-social problems, they were endeavoring to live their life positively with a sense of gratitude by overcoming such troubles and adapting themselves to their troubled life.
